3 Easy Herbs To Grow Indoors Plus How to Use Them

Published: Jan 22, 2018 · Modified: Jun 21, 2020 by Audrey · This post may contain affiliate links.

Looking to freshen up your kitchen and add flavor to your cooking? Try growing herbs indoors! It is a great way to ensure that you always have herbs to liven up your meals - no need to drive down to the store, no need to spend money. All you have to do is pick from the herbs by your kitchen window sill. You save money, you save time and it makes your kitchen smell amazing! Today, I am going to share three herbs that are easy to grow and can be used in a variety of ways.

Create an Indoor Herb Garden: 3 easy to grow herbs and recipes to use them. #gardening #recipes #herbs

I have talked about planters to use when creating your own indoor herb garden.

These are my current containers (cheap and I had a bunch on hand):

    Mint

One of the top recommendations when looking for herbs you can grow indoors is mint. Mint can be used in so many different ways, not just cooking. It is also great for adding flavor to your infused water, smoothies, and homemade juices. You can use it for natural cleaning supplies, room scents, aromatherapy, and homemade body products as well (like this easy sugar scrub).

Mint grows very quickly. It can take over a space outdoors if not contained. But, this makes it idea for indoor gardens. You need a good amount of sun and should keep it moist at all times.

Some mint recipes you may enjoy:

    Mint Jelly from Cupcake Rehab

Blueberry Watermelon Mint Salad from She Wears Many Hats

    Tabbouli Salad from That Recipe

Lemon Mint Vinaigrette from Eating Well

Fresh Mint Gelato from Your Home Based Mom

    Mint Julep from Technotini

    Parsley

Parsley is a perfect herb if you are looking to add more flavor to your dishes with more of a subtle flavor. I throw it in everything from salads to soups and of course on top of any Italian dish.

Growing parsley from seed can be a lesson in patience. There is an old saying that parsley seed goes 9 times to the devil and then back before sprouting. It is easy to grow, but you do have to wait a long time for the seeds to germinate (hint: feel free to get a small plant and transplant if you don't want to wait).

Some ways to enjoy fresh parsley:

    Parsley Pesto from That Recipe

Tabbouli Salad from That Recipe (yes, it uses both mint and parsley)

    Chimichurri from Harvest2U

Trout with Lemon Butter Herb Sauce from Julia's Album

    Chives

Another easy herb to grow indoors is chives. This is by far one of the easiest ones to grow inside your home as you don’t need constant heat and sunshine. You should still keep the chives container near a window that gets some sunshine, but don’t stress about it too much. Use a nice clay pot with proper drainage and good soil. You should keep them wet, but not sopping wet, in order to help the chives grow.

A few recipes for chives besides on top of a baked potato:

Tomato and Herb Scones from That Recipe

Chive Blossom Butter from Feathers in the Woods

Sour Cream Chive Biscuits from The Merchant Baker

Mashed Cauliflower with Parmesan and Chives from Foodie Crush

Aside from mint, parsley and chives, there are other herbs that can be planted and kept indoors such as basil, cilantro and thyme. It is all a matter of your preference.

I'd love to know: What herbs does your family enjoy? Are you growing them at home? Have you tried an indoor herb garden before?
