Friday Frivolity the Parenting Advice Edition

This will be the final baby themed Friday Frivolity for us… at least for awhile. We may have to sneak in some more once Baby Devastate Boredom is finally here. But for now we are finishing with a doozy: bad parenting advice.

Even before the baby is born parents start getting parenting advice from everyone. Even those without kids.

There are hundreds of thousands of parenting advice books covering all different methods of parenting. This is the only one you really need (affiliate link). No, really you need this one. It will make you laugh which will release endorphins and make everyone happier and less stressed.

You have probably seen the pages copied online, but the actual board book has the ever valuable “Wheel of Responsibility”

I received some really bad “advice” in J’s early months. The absolute worst was while suffering severe sleep deprivation (borderline depression) when J was about a year old, a mom in our Mom and Me group with a child younger than mine told me

Well it is YOUR fault he isn’t sleeping at night.

Well, gee thanks that makes me feel so much better. You mean all I have to do is raise my child the way you tell me? Silly me thinking I knew my child better than you…. But, I was so unsure of myself and spent far too long believing I was to blame. Low and behold a few years later we find out it wasn’t my fault, that’s just the way his brain works.

After I eliminated that negative influence from my life I finally realized the only thing a parent really needs to do:

Love your child and do what is best for your family.

If someone tries to tell you that you are doing it wrong, ignore them. You know your child best.

Unless, of course, you accidentally leave him Home Alone…

  1. Haha! Those are pretty funny! We can’t be that bad…we don’t go on vacation and forget our kids!

    1. Even after becoming a mom I am still baffled by the premise that you can get on a plane for Paris and not notice your kid is with you. Of course that was pre-TSA… ha ha!

  2. Ha-well, look at us, being all matchy-matchy and bloggy twins with our posts! No wonder I like you so much… 😀

    1. I commented the same thing on your blog. Hopefully Sarah can learn from our experiences and they will shut out the advice and do what is best for little DB.

  3. Love this! Motherhood was a revelation, then motherhood with a wonderful son who happens to have Autism is like riding a roller coaster on another planet – but what fun! Thanks for this, hope this weekend treats everyone kindly. Now off to visit and share some more! 🙂

    1. “like riding a roller coaster on another planet” EXACTLY!!! It is a weird and wonderful ride, but like nothing I expected.

  4. Ugh. I would have felt compelled to throat punch the lady at the Mom & Me group.

I’m with you. If I don’t leave my kid home while I fly to Paris, I’m doing pretty good!

    Thanks for hosting!

    1. I was so sleep deprived and desperate at the time that I believed her, and things got ugly. After a few good nights sleep I realized SHE was the problem.
