8 Reasons to Craft with Your Kids for National Crafting Month

    Mar 1, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Child tearing tissue paper with text overlay

Some parents are skilled crafters. Others are doing well to cut paper in a reasonably straight line. No matter which group you fall into, crafting with your kids can be beneficial for all involved.

child tearing tissue paper with craft overlayIn honor of National Crafting Month, here are some positive outcomes that come out of crafting with your kids. I have scattered some projects we have made throughout the post, click on the photos to go to the project description.

Crafting is a great way to learn basic skills.

Almost any type of craft promotes hand-eye coordination. Kids can also learn to use scissors, measure and do many other things they will eventually do in everyday life. Older kids might enjoy learning practical life skills like sewing, knitting and word working that were almost last but are making a resurgence lately

    Crafting builds creativity.

Our minds need a creative outlet. Crafting provides the opportunity for kids to use their imaginations. It helps them learn to solve problems, and it could lay the groundwork for a lifetime of interest in art. For parents, getting creative can help reduce stress and promote using the brain in ways that we don't always use in our daily routines.

Kid's Craft: Decoupage Vase. A recycled bottle, some tissue paper and glue is all that's needed to make this lovely little vase. Mother's Day craft
Kids Craft: Strawberry Basket Craft for Mother's Day and May Day. upcycled craft, recycled craft.
A Big Hug Card craft for kids
Heart Box for Daddy: Make a heart shaped box from a recycled cereal box. Fun project for kids. Valentines for kids.

Crafting teaches the importance of following directions.

This seems like a very basic skill, but we all know adults who can't seem to follow directions. My husband the College Math Instructor complains about this daily. When kids craft, they learn the consequences of not following directions when their projects do not turn out as expected.  Some projects, like model building, require a specific series of steps and not following directions can lead to disaster.

    Crafting is a confidence booster.

Parents who craft regularly know the feeling of accomplishment when a project is complete. Multiply this feeling by ten, and you have a pretty good idea of how your child feels when he makes something. Stand outside any preschool or kindergarten class at pick up and you will probably hear "Look what I made!" While older kids may not show off their same way, they still want us parents to be proud of their artistic accomplishments.

Crafting with your kids can help both of you learn something while creating something beautiful. #parenting #crafts Click to Tweet

Crafting is a great way to wind down.

It's wonderful for kids to be active, but there are times when they need to calm down.  Crafting engages kids' minds, giving them something to focus on and a good reason to sit still for a while. Snow days (or smog and fire days here in California) when the kids can't go outside and are bouncing off the walls and you are feeling stir crazy yourself is a great opportunity to unwind with some crafting time.

Crafting together provides a chance to talk.

You would be amazed at the conversations you can have with your child when your mind and hands are focused on crafting. When I was teaching I often learned the most about what my students were thinking and feeling when we were crafting. And most of the time it required little prompting on my part.

    Shell Collage
Mario figure standing next to a mushroom house in a garden with text overlay "DIY Mushroom Kingdom for your yard."

    Crafting together teaches teamwork.

This will help them develop skills needed to resolve disputes peacefully and effectively. It will also help them discover their strengths and teach them that doing their best will make the entire project turn out better. And parents can always use some teamwork lessons too.

    Crafting creates treasured family memories.

The finished product will serve as a reminder of the fun you had making it together. Yes, I am the mom that regularly displays our creations. Every month I bring out different crafts we have made in the past, and while my son may not always remember making them, I do.

Crafting as a family provides opportunities for us to interact with our children. It is also a valuable learning experience for them and us. Don't worry if you aren't the world's greatest crafter. Simply being willing to try anyway is a lesson to your kids in itself.

    The Images

For those of you wondering how I created the Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad images with a transparent background (mostly Future Me that may try to do it again):

    1. My son and I photographed our Amiibos on a white background
    2. Opened in Adobe Photoshop
    3. Selected all of the background with the quick selection tool (function w), zoom in, use the + and - options to select just around the figure.
    4. Inverted the selection (select: inverse)
    5. Copied (ctrl c)
    6. Created a new image (file: new), choose "from clipboard" and "transparent" background.
    7. Saved as png

Then I used my favorite design tool, Canva, to create the Valentines.

My son's eyes got as big as saucers when he saw them and he proclaimed "Those are awesome." High praise from the boy that is convinced I ruin everything 🙂

    How to Print

There are 4 images on the page and since he is starting division I made him do the math as to how many copies we needed to print.

You can print directly on card stock or on plain paper then glue on a square or heart shaped piece of construction paper.

3 Easy Herbs To Grow Indoors Plus How to Use Them

    Jan 22, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Create an Indoor Herb Garden: 3 easy to grow herbs and recipes to use them. #gardening #recipes #herbs

Looking to freshen up your kitchen and add flavor to your cooking? Try growing herbs indoors! It is a great way to ensure that you always have herbs to liven up your meals - no need to drive down to the store, no need to spend money. All you have to do is pick from the herbs by your kitchen window sill. You save money, you save time and it makes your kitchen smell amazing! Today, I am going to share three herbs that are easy to grow and can be used in a variety of ways.

Create an Indoor Herb Garden: 3 easy to grow herbs and recipes to use them. #gardening #recipes #herbs

I have talked about planters to use when creating your own indoor herb garden.

These are my current containers (cheap and I had a bunch on hand):

    Mint

One of the top recommendations when looking for herbs you can grow indoors is mint. Mint can be used in so many different ways, not just cooking. It is also great for adding flavor to your infused water, smoothies, and homemade juices. You can use it for natural cleaning supplies, room scents, aromatherapy, and homemade body products as well (like this easy sugar scrub).

Create an Indoor Herb Garden: 3 easy to grow herbs and recipes to use them. #gardening #recipes #herbs

Mint grows very quickly. It can take over a space outdoors if not contained. But, this makes it idea for indoor gardens. You need a good amount of sun and should keep it moist at all times.

Some mint recipes you may enjoy:

    Mint Jelly from Cupcake Rehab

Blueberry Watermelon Mint Salad from She Wears Many Hats

    Tabbouli Salad from That Recipe

Lemon Mint Vinaigrette from Eating Well

Fresh Mint Gelato from Your Home Based Mom

    Mint Julep from Technotini

    Parsley

Parsley is a perfect herb if you are looking to add more flavor to your dishes with more of a subtle flavor. I throw it in everything from salads to soups and of course on top of any Italian dish.

Growing parsley from seed can be a lesson in patience. There is an old saying that parsley seed goes 9 times to the devil and then back before sprouting. It is easy to grow, but you do have to wait a long time for the seeds to germinate (hint: feel free to get a small plant and transplant if you don't want to wait).

Some ways to enjoy fresh parsley:

    Parsley Pesto from That Recipe

Tabbouli Salad from That Recipe (yes, it uses both mint and parsley)

    Chimichurri from Harvest2U

Trout with Lemon Butter Herb Sauce from Julia's Album

Add freshness and flavor to your home: 3 easy herbs to grow indoors and recipes to use them. Click to Tweet

    Chives

Another easy herb to grow indoors is chives. This is by far one of the easiest ones to grow inside your home as you don’t need constant heat and sunshine. You should still keep the chives container near a window that gets some sunshine, but don’t stress about it too much. Use a nice clay pot with proper drainage and good soil. You should keep them wet, but not sopping wet, in order to help the chives grow.

A few recipes for chives besides on top of a baked potato:

Tomato and Herb Scones from That Recipe

Chive Blossom Butter from Feathers in the Woods

Sour Cream Chive Biscuits from The Merchant Baker

Mashed Cauliflower with Parmesan and Chives from Foodie Crush

Aside from mint, parsley and chives, there are other herbs that can be planted and kept indoors such as basil, cilantro and thyme. It is all a matter of your preference.

I'd love to know: What herbs does your family enjoy? Are you growing them at home? Have you tried an indoor herb garden before?

3 Simple Steps to Creating New Habits and Improving Your Life

    Jan 3, 2018 · 5 Comments

Simple Steps for Creating New Habits for Improving Your Life.

Let’s talk about forming new habits. We all have times in our lives where we intentionally want to change our behavior for the better and create new habits for ourselves. This could be getting in the habit of eating healthier and drinking more water. Or it could be moving more and taking the dog for a daily walk. Or focusing on positive thinking. Or it could be work related, or spiritual, or… There are so many areas in our lives that could be improved and made easier if we created new habits.

Simple Steps for Creating New Habits for Improving Your Life. #selfimprovement #newhabits

Getting into the habit of doing something is often easier said than done. We seem to acquire bad habits without any effort, but getting into a “good” habit can be a little more challenging. Or is that just me?

Let’s break it down into a three step process that makes it easy to follow until we’ve internalized the new behavior and made it a true habit – something we do automatically without having to think about, like brushing our teeth.

Decide What You Want To Do

The first step is to decide what you want that new habit to be. Be as specific as possible. Don’t just tell yourself you want to exercise more. Instead say something like “I will go for a 30 minute walk every single day”. Deciding what your new habit will be and committing to when and how you’re going to do it, is half the battle.

    Many use SMART goals

    S - specific
    M - measurable
    A - achievable
    R - realistic
    T - timely

Going from a sedentary lifestyle to running a marathon in a week may be specific and measurable, but for most of us it is neither achievable nor realistic.

Remind Yourself To Get It Done

The next few days should be smooth sailing. You’re motivated and excited to get this done. Sticking to your new habit isn’t an issue. But a few days in you’ll notice that it’s easy to slip back into old habits.

Maybe it’s raining and you don’t really want to go out and walk. Or maybe your day just gets away from you. This is when it’s important to have a daily reminder.

Set an alert on your phone or add the new habit to your daily to-do list for a while. I use Google calendar with alerts that nag me on both my phone and computer, one of which is almost always with me. Some productivity experts I know like ToDoist or Evernote.

Another productivity tool I want to mention that helps remind me to stay on task and not get distracted by social media is Strict Workflow (for Chrome) which blocks sites for me for a set period of time so I am not tempted to start wandering off on Pinterest.

[Tweet "Become a better YOU with these tips for developing positive habits. #selfimprovement "]

Make It Part Of Your Routine Until It Becomes A Habit

Which brings us to the last step. It takes some time before a new behavior becomes a true habit. Until then, a routine will work to your best advantage. Even before the new behavior becomes automatic, a routine will help you get it done without having to spend a lot of willpower or relying on daily reminders.

Make that daily walk part of your after dinner routine, or change from grabbing a snack at the vending machine at work at 10:00 in the morning to packing a healthy snack.

Congratulations! Decide to create the new habit, practice the routine until it’s second nature and you’ll be well on your way to forming a new good habit.

7 Easy Ideas to Create Your Own Indoor Herb Garden

    Nov 29, 2017 · 2 Comments

Growing herbs is a great way to always have them on hand, which then encourages you to use them more often. When you have fresh herbs at all times, it also helps you to want to cook from home more often, which is healthier and even helps your family lose weight.

One great thing you can do is grow herbs indoors. This keeps them close to you and prevents you from needing an elaborate herb garden. It is a good option if you live in apartment or condo, or a house with very little backyard space.

7 Easy Ideas to help you create your own indoor herb garden for fresh herbs year round. #herbs #gardening

Here are some different DIY indoor herb garden ideas to try out. Many of the links below are affiliate links. I may receive a commission for purchases made through the links at no additional cost to you.

    Put Herbs in Mason Jars

If you want to use individual containers, why not use mason jars? They are inexpensive, last a long time, and since you can see through them, you are able to track the growth. Get detailed instructions in this post.

Plant herbs in Mason Jars for your round herbs. #gardening #herbs

Hang Herb Pots Above the Kitchen Sink

Another option for a DIY indoor herb project is to hang the pots of herbs in front of the window, instead of trying to set them on the counter or windowsill. This is a good option when you have good light coming through the window, but not really any space to put the pots. You might have a kitchen window with just a slim windowsill, but not a roomy ledge. In this case, you can instead hang the pots of growing herbs from the ceiling in your kitchen to where they reach down to the window and get direct sunlight. Here's a fun set of self watering pots.

    Create a One-Pot Herb Garden

One idea for growing herbs inside your home is to use just one large pot instead of multiple little pots. This provides a more unique growing opportunity, while also taking up less space in your kitchen. You might have a small kitchen window where there is really only space for a single large pot. Use this to your advantage by having just a small amount of several different herbs in the soil of the pot, spacing them out as much as you can. Herbs are typically small and each requires the same type of soil and watering schedule, so the majority of herbs can be grown together like this in the same container.

    4 Indoor Herb Garden Containers

Here are 4 different container kits to help get you started on your indoor herb gardening journey.

    1. Herb Garden Seed Starter Kit by Nature’s Blossom

You will receive containers that you can place inside your home or on your patio to grow the herbs.

    2. Indoor Herb Garden Planter Box Kit

    3. Miracle-Gro AeroGarden Sprout With Gourmet Herb Seed Pod Kit
This indoor hydroponic herb garden kit and container is made by Miracle-Gro. While it is a little pricier, you get a little more with the kit than some of the others on the list. You can choose from a few different types of AeroGarden containers when you get this herb growing kit. You will get a very attraction garden container to grow your herbs in, which is great for indoor use, including in your kitchen or even your home office. There are three different gourmet herb seed pods that come with it, including curly parsley, dill, and basil.

    4. 5-Tier Stackable Strawberry, Herb, Flower, and Vegetable Planter
This herb growing container is perfect for growing just about anything indoors, from vegetables and herbs, to flowers. It is also frequently used for people who want to grow strawberries from inside their home. This is a vertical garden container that includes five different levels, or tiers. It is considerably larger than the other table top models on this list, but it can be used indoors or on your patio. It comes in hunter green and stone, and includes bottom saucers that help to gather the water. All of the materials are food-safe.

Hopefully you can see just how easy it is to have fresh herbs year round. The flavor they add to a dish is worth it!

There are 5 designs and all you need to do is click, print and trim the one(s) of your choice. Then wrap it around your bottle and secure it.

Which wine goes best with Thanksgiving dinner?

Traditional wisdom says stay away from Chardonnay (too oak-y) or heavy reds like Cabernet Sauvignon.

But, all of my personal wine experts agree, the best choice is the one you (or the recipient) like best.

    Cutting the wine labels

If you have a paper cutter, use it! Otherwise you probably want to mark a line with a straight edge before cutting. The labels all have a small margin on the left that you want to trim.

    Securing the wine labels

Wrap the label around the bottle. Tape or glue the left edge on top of the right. If you don't want that much overlap, trim the right edge before securing.

    The labels

I didn't include cutting guides so you can determine how tall you need them to be to cover the existing bottle labels. They will fit around standard wine bottles with a few inches of overlap.  Sparkling wine bottles are about 12 inches around so you can either have a gap in the back of the bottle, or trim the front and back of the labels and glue/tape them over the existing labels.

    Wine is bottled poetry

    Wine makes daily living easier

    Give thanks to the Lord

    Kindness comes from the heart

Thanksgiving is a time of togetherness

I hope you enjoy the labels and have a delight filled Thanksgiving.

Plant Herbs in Mason Jars for Year Round Flavor

Plant herbs in Mason Jars for your round herbs. #gardening #herbs

There are many containers that let you plant herbs inside your home or on a patio, but mason jars are among the most popular. It makes for a fun display while also providing a convenient container for your different herbs.

    Gather Your Supplies

The first thing you need to do when you intend to plant herbs in a mason jar is to gather your supplies. You should use larger size mason jars with wide mouth openings, preferably the 32-ounce jars. You will also need some potting mix, the herb seeds or plants, small rocks, and some labels for the jars.

    Planting the Herbs

Now that you have your supplies ready, you can get started on planting the herbs.

Puts in rocks first. You can also use gravel or marbles at the bottom of the jar. These are there for drainage since your mason jars don’t have holes. Just a thin layer of rocks is all you need.

Add your potting mix on top of the rocks. Make sure you are using potting soil, and not regular soil. The potting soil is lighter and often includes organic material that helps the herbs to thrive indoors. You should have the soil taking up the majority of the jar, except for about the top few inches.

Add the seeds. By this point, you are ready to add your herb seeds. You can also transplant herb plants, but some herbs don’t remain healthy through transplanting.

Planting herbs in your mason jars is a simple and easy way to make sure that your meals are always exciting and flavorful. And as you can see with the step-by-step guide above, it doesn't take a lot of money, a lot of time or a lot of space in order to grow them. Try them now, you would not regret it.

The Good and The Bad About Autism and Social Awareness

    Sep 25, 2017 · Leave a Comment

It is hard for any parent to watch a child become influenced by his peers opinions. #autism #parenting

One of the characteristics common among people on the Autism Spectrum is a lack of social awareness. Many, like my son, do not have an innate understanding of the social skills many of us take for granted. Personal space, appropriate vocal loudness, visual and verbal cues most of us use to interpret a situation need to be taught and retaught.

My son becomes so absorbed in his interests that he is oblivious to those around him. I often joke that he is in his own world and occasionally stops in to visit ours.

Sometimes his lack of social awareness is actually a blessing in disguise, like when some kids at school ridiculed him for getting muddy or told him only girls wear red rain boots. In both instances he didn't care he was being made fun of. Unfortunately, he also didn't understand his friends were coming to his defense.

It is hard for any parent to watch a child become influenced by his peers opinions. #autism #parenting

This weekend two separate instances let me know all of the hard work developing his social skills is getting through to him. And I admit I have mixed feelings about it.

[Tweet "As an #Autism mom, I struggle with my son's increasing social awareness. #parenting"]

    The Good

Two of his friends come over after school and I treat them to popsicles because it has been so hot on our walk home. One can't have dairy. When we were at the store I told J he could pick some out for the three of them. He stood surveying his choices for a bit then asked me "Can Kai have these?" Unfortunately they were fudgesicles, #1 ingredient is nonfat milk. He disappointingly put them back and chose something else. I could tell he really wanted them but picking something everyone could have was more important.

    The Bad

His class gets to bring a stuff animal to class for the day as a reward for their Fun Run.  He is a bit obsessed with Mario and everyone knows it.  He has a few dozen Super Mario plush.

Mom: "Which plush are you bringing tomorrow?"

Son: "One of my old ones, like a bear or something."

Mom: "You don't want to bring Mario or Luigi?"

Son: "Nobody in my class likes Mario, so I will just bring something else."

**CRASH** the sound of my heart breaking as I realized he is starting to care about what other people think and trying to conform to their expectations.

    The Future

I want my child to be happy. I want him to find his place in the world. I want him to know he can fit in, but still stand out. Just like all parents.

How to Stay Motivated When Anxious, Depressed or Overwhelmed: Motivational Series Part 5

man on mountain with arms raised and text overlay "Stay Motivated even when you are anxious, depressed or overwhelmed"

Motivation is an elusive concept for many people. Despite having big dreams or desiring to accomplish a particular goal, taking the steps necessary to reach the end objective can seem impossible. Sometimes just completing the bare minimum feels like all you can do. Forget the idea of accomplishing anything greater. As you strive for improvement there will invariably come times of struggle. You may become anxious, depressed or overwhelmed by the tasks still to accomplish.

However, there are some strategies you can take to increase your motivation even when anxious or depressed. Continue reading for some tangible ways to help you move past survival mode.

    Do It for Someone Else

While personal goals generally need to come from within in order to be meaningful, anxiety and depression can make generating any kind of internal feeling beyond despair difficult. Intrinsic motivation, or the kind that comes from inside you, simply may not be something you can muster right now. One way to “trick” yourself into becoming motivated is to think of ways your goal may benefit others.

When I don't feel like finishing a post or pitching myself to a brand, I remind myself that if I make enough money blogging, my husband will be able to teach one less class and be home with us more, which in turn will lighten my load. While it shouldn’t be a long-term solution, it can sometimes be enough to get you moving and lead to fueling further motivation.

    Outsource Dreaded Tasks

Deferring your most-dreaded tasks onto someone else may be especially effective for those dealing with anxiety. Many anxiety sufferers fear talking on the phone. If possible, request that a significant other or friend make important phone calls on your behalf.  Some things can be outsourced in order to make everything else more manageable. If finances allow, you can pay professionals to bear certain loads for you. Otherwise, some creativity may be in order. The relief you’ll experience is worth the initial expenditure of energy required to generate creative outsourcing solutions.

Can't afford a maid? Well why did you have kids if not to make them clean your house. Ha ha! All kidding aside, recruiting your children to do small tasks around the house is good for your stress level and for them. Do a babysitting swap with a friend so you can knock out a few blog posts in silence. Hire a Virtual Assistant to do that blogging task you dread.

    Do the Fun Stuff First

Many life coaches or other experts will recommend that you tackle the tough or boring items on your list first in order to get them out of the way. The theory is that you’ll feel more accomplished, and finishing the rest of your project or goal will be easier.  Sometimes that doesn't work. Therefore, turn the advice upside down and start with the easiest part first. Or do the absolute bare minimum or smallest part first. Once you’ve summoned the motivation to just get started in some way, continuing on will be a more likely prospect.

In the house cleaning department, if my floors are covered in Legos and markers or the sink is filled with dishes I instantly feel overwhelmed. Even if I don't have time to do anything else, if I do those few things my mood instantly lifts and I am able to accomplish the rest of the cleaning.

    Be Gentle With Yourself

If you were helping a friend in your situation, you’d likely have all the compassion in the world for them. You’d probably offer words of encouragement for the small achievements your pal made and be there to take up some slack when they’re feeling unable. In order to foster motivation, you absolutely must show yourself this same level of compassion. Reward or praise yourself for every small accomplishment. This can be taking a break to watch your favorite show or enjoying a simple indulgence (chocolate! but just a little) . Even praising yourself for your efforts can be effective.

Along that same vein, be sure not to chastise yourself for perceived faults. Instead, focus on what you were able to get done or remind yourself that you are currently facing some tough obstacles and you’re doing your best. Negative self-talk is self-sabotage and kills motivation.

You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.

Accept that there will be struggles in your journey towards your goals. Everyone has struggles. But those that have succeeded move past the troubles and keep going. Incorporating these steps into your daily routine can significantly increase your motivation even when the sailing isn't smooth.

Feeling Unmotivated? Try Meditation: Motivation Series Part 4

Learn how meditation can motivate you to achieve your goals by providing clarity and calm.

woman with eyes closed bowing head in prayer with text overlay "Unmotivated? try meditation!"

Waning motivation is a problem for many of us. The stress and strain of a busy life can overwhelm you, making even the most basic of tasks seem difficult. The downward spiral of low motivation can seem like an impossible cycle to break. Once you lose your spark, productivity and accomplishment can seem like unattainable goals.

There is one simple tool you may not have considered before that can get you back on track, and that’s meditation. This exercise of the mind goes well beyond providing just relaxation.

    What is meditation?

Meditation takes many forms. For some the thought of sitting cross legged on the floor chanting mantras and practicing rhythmic breathing is unChristian and abhorrent.

Transcendental meditation may work for some, but it is not the only method.

The Bible is filled with references to meditation as a practice to be praised. What do you think Mary was doing when she was "pondering in her heart"? (Luke 2:19)

For the purposes of this post I use meditation in the broadest sense:

to think deeply or focus one's mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.

You can gain a host of good things through its practice. Continue reading to discover the benefits of meditation for motivation.

    Strengthened Focus and Concentration

Focus and concentration are essential elements of motivation. If you can’t force your mind to center on the things you need to do, your motivation will go out the window.

Meditation is all about focus and concentration.

No matter which of its many forms you practice, chances are you will be engaging in focusing your mind in some way. Engaging in regular meditation will naturally strengthen your ability to concentrate and focus in your everyday life.

    Increased Happiness

We all get down now and again. More and more individuals are being diagnosed with depression in modern times. Regardless of your mental starting point, it’s a known fact that happy people often have more energy and higher self-confidence.

Fortunately, motivation has been shown to increase happiness by stimulating the release of the brain’s “happiness hormones.” When you’re feeling more positive, you’re likely to have more internal desire to get things done.

    Less Stress

Meditation leads to a more relaxed state due to the way in which it allows the brain to slow down as it receives sensory input. This relaxation and improved processing leads to reduced feelings of stress. With less stress comes a feeling of more control, which then fuels your motivation.

    Positive Thinking

One of the biggest killers of motivation is negative thinking. A pessimistic view can come from many sources such as depression, poor habits or general life difficulties.

The beauty of meditation is that it “rewires” brain patterns that naturally elicit more positive thought patterns, giving you the reset you need to be more motivated.

    Clarified Goals and Purpose

Taking time each day for meditation gives you a great deal of personal insight. This self-reflection can be the catalyst for reassessing what’s truly important in your life.

When you have a better picture of your priorities, your goals and life’s purpose become clearer.

Knowing where you want to go kicks your motivation into high-gear, and you’ll feel a greater urgency to take the steps necessary on the path to your dreams.

Your mnd will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer

The benefits of meditation for increased motivation are extensive. These are some of the main ways in which this daily mind practice can jumpstart the actions required for reaching your goals.

There are many different types of meditation. You can begin to research on your own or find a skilled teacher who can help you develop a practice that works for you.

What’s most important is that you get started and maintain consistency in your meditation practice in order to see the most effective results. Soon you’ll be tackling your to-do list and pursuing the life goals that matter with renewed vigor.

    Put it into Action

If you don't already practice meditation in some form, Google it now and do a little research. Find a method that appeals to you and start practicing daily. Set an appointment reminder on your phone if you need it.

Goal Setting Will Motivate You to Succeed: Motivation Series Part 3

hand placing wooden star on top of wooden block pyramid and text overlay "goal setting can motivate you to succeed"

Goal Setting is an integral step towards success that will motivate you to continue working to achieve your dreams. And it is backed by science!

hand placing wooden star on top of wooden block pyramid and text overlay "goal setting can motivate you to succeed"

There is a strong connection between goal setting and maintaining the motivation required to successfully attain them. In fact, in the 1960’s, behavioral research led to an understanding of the relation between these concepts, and theories were developed to shed insight on the concrete ways one influences the other.

Let’s take a look at the basis of these theories and then at some of the reasons to utilize goal setting for motivational success.

Theories of Goal Setting and Motivation

The first researcher to study the relationship between goal setting and motivation was Dr. Edwin Locke. He published his findings in 1968. Locke’s Goal Setting Theory concluded that specific goals provided more motivation than vague ones. Along these lines, goals that provided a challenge were shown to be better motivators than easier ones. In addition, Locke discovered that positive feedback was highly influential toward increasing motivation.

Essentially, the very act of creating a goal leads to better performance.

Decades later, in 1990, Locke paired up with Dr. Gary Latham to develop the Goal Setting and Motivation Theory, whose main premise is that five fundamental principles influence effective goals setting and that goal achievement is more likely when higher numbers of these principles are in place.

The five fundamental principles of the theory are:

    • Clarity
    • Challenge
    • Complexity
    • Commitment
    • Feedback

In essence, your goals should be clear and provide you with enough of a challenge to entice you to reach them. However, it’s important that these goals not be so complex as to cause frustration or overwhelm; this would be counterproductive. Goals that inspire motivation also should include an aspect of formally committing to them and have a check-in method in place to determine satisfactory progression.

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.

    Benefits of Goal Setting

    Provide Reference

By developing objectives through the framework of goal setting theories, you are providing yourself with a tangible reference point to keep you on track. Thus, your motivation is likely to endure. You are able to look at the points you’ve written down in order to remind yourself of your purpose and to validate that you are moving in the right direction.

    Add Manageability

Proper structure of your goals can also make your overall plan seem more attainable. By assuring that your goals are challenging, you’ll keep your brain stimulated. Breaking things down into short-term and long-term targets, along with similar strategies, can help you to avoid becoming overwhelmed by one big goal that is simply too complex to be achieved. Motivation is better sustained when you feel some agency over your goals.

    Instill Accountability

By adding a check-in mechanism of some sort, you will be instilling a sense of accountability to your goals. It’s easy to toss a goal aside when you don’t really have to answer to anyone, or even yourself, with regard to progress. Find an accountability partner to share accomplishments with or build assessment dates into your calendar in which you self-check your progress.

    Increase Confidence

Challenging, yet realistic, goals that allow for the monitoring of progress can do a lot for your sense of mastery. Seeing your goal becoming closer to reality through hard work and skill is empowering. Hearing praise from your network is also motivating toward fulfilling an objective. Confidence is increased through all of these things.

    Improve Life Quality

Essentially, having well-developed goals can lead to a more fulfilling life. By taking the time to proactively define what you want and working toward that desire, you are living with purpose. Those who know what they want and feel they are on track to achieve it are generally more motivated and satisfied individuals.

As you can see, there is a strong relationship between goals and motivation. In order to sustain motivation, you must not only set goals, but your goals need to have structure. Following these guidelines can increase both your motivation and your chances of reaching your intentions.

    Put it into Action

Choose one of your dreams, aspirations, hopes, wants, etc. and create a concrete actionable goal complete with time line. A few examples to get you started:

"I will double my blog revenue by the end of the year."
"I will be able to bench press my current max weight five times in three months."
"We will save $200 in our emergency fund by October 31."

This activity will help you clearly define your goal and set a deadline in your mind to help motivate you to undertake the actions necessary to achieve it.

Five Tricks to Boost Motivation Quickly: Motivation Series Part 2

5 quick tricks when you need to get motivated NOW!

Sometimes you need to get started on a project right away. Maybe you’ve been procrastinating for days, or even weeks, and now you’re down to the wire on an unforgiving deadline. The threat of not completing the job on time should be enough to motivate you to get moving, right? Wrong. Often, even knowing the consequences that exist for not completing a task aren’t enough to push us forward. Fortunately, there are some tangible steps you can take in order to give yourself a boost when your usual routine isn’t working.

Keep reading for some of the best ways to improve your motivation fast. Adding even a few of these to your bag of tricks may help you to overcome that slump when you need a motivational jumpstart.

5 quick tricks when you need to get motivated NOW! Easy motivational strategies to jumpstart you into action.

    Look Ahead

One way to convince your brain that an activity is worth starting is to look ahead to the end result. Think about the money you’ll make a from a freelance gig, the feeling of satisfaction you’ll get from handing in your portion of the monthly report to a nagging co-worker or the freedom to begin your two-week semester break when your last paper is submitted. No matter what the project, visualizing the result of your efforts can improve your focus and motivation. Consider adding an actual visual such as a photo, magazine clipping or other image to motivate you.

Confession time. This is what got me to put the finishing touches on this series: vacation starts next week and then we jump right into back to school. Get this series done and let it run on auto-pilot while I enjoy time at the beach in the photo on my computer wall paper. (Don't worry I will still be checking comments 😉 )

    Get Moving

If you’re feeling sleepy or even restless, you won’t be able to focus on that pressing task. A solution can be to move your body. Exercise has been shown to increase mental clarity and decrease stress, just the combination for working on a complex project with a looming deadline. Taking a brisk walk or heading to the gym for a quick step aerobics class on your lunch hour can be just enough of a jolt to get you in prime thinking mode. Be careful not to overdo it or you’ll be too exhausted to do much of anything.

Walking or stationary cycling often helps me with blog posts. The repetitive action helps me focus and I usually have an outline for the post done by the time I finish.

    Take a Rest

It’s also possible that a quick rest can restore your clear thinking. If your brain is feeling cloudy or your thoughts are cloudy, a short nap might be a better course of action than exercise. Put your head down on your desk or stretch out on the sofa in your office for 10 or 20 minutes. When you wake up from this power nap, you should be feeling rejuvenated and ready to work.

    Listen to Music

Upbeat tunes might be a solution that leads you to start tapping your toes and feeling more alert. If you are able to work with background noise, you can keep the music going. Perhaps changing to a mellower playlist or instrumental songs might be a better option for you than fast beats. If you require silence in order to concentrate, put on just a few of your favorites to shift your mood, and then get to work.

    Start Small

A method that is often successful in tricking the mind to move on a task is to start with a small portion of the whole. Using the above example of the monthly report, you might wish to begin by gathering your data and other supplies necessary for completing the job. This small action can put you in the right mindset to keep working on the rest. Getting started truly is half the battle.

People often say that motivaiton doesn't last. Well neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.

These suggestions can, and should, be tailored to fit your personality, preferences and lifestyle. Experiment a bit. Use the ones that work for you, and throw out the rest. You’ll likely be surprised by the significant effect a simple action can have on your productivity.

    Put it into Action

Learn The Science of Motivation to Propel Your Goals: Motivation Series Part 1

    Jul 27, 2017 · 7 Comments

When it comes to success, there is one key component that may be more important than even such factors as talent, intelligence, money or connections. That elusive piece of the puzzle is motivation. After all, without motivation, nothing can be accomplished. You won’t reach your goals or meet your self-imposed deadlines without the motivation to take action toward them. Unfortunately, that motivation is often what is lacking in the fulfillment of desires. We all have lists of things we hope to accomplish. These lists contain big goals, daily tasks and everything in between. Learning how to increase your motivation will boost the likelihood of checking more items off your list. Let’s take a look at the science of motivation and the ways to harness it to your advantage.

    An Improved Approach to Motivation

Author Dan Pink writes in his best-selling book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, that there are three components of motivation that compel individuals to get things done. His premise is that the traditional method of motivating ourselves and others using a carrots and sticks type of reward system is ineffective. Instead, he argues that the scientific approach to understanding the makeup of motivation provides a far better lens from which to view the subject. By understanding the factors that tangibly affect motivation, we can then develop strategies to increase it.

    Three Elements of Motivation

The three elements of motivation Pink discusses in his book are autonomy, value and competence. It is these components, according to researchers, that drive people to become motivated.

Autonomy refers to the amount of control or independence one feels over a task or action. It has been shown that when you feel that you have a significant amount of input regarding that task, you are more likely to follow through to completion.

The second component of motivation, value, is the amount of personal significance or importance you place on a matter. In essence, if something matters to you on a personal level, you will feel more motivation to take it on than if you are simply given an assignment to which you feel no connection.

Competence has been found to come from an individual’s feeling of mastery as it relates to practice and hard work, not necessarily to one’s natural abilities. If you spend time developing competence toward a particular goal, it is predicted that you will be more motivated to complete said goal.

[Tweet "Learn the science of Motivation to get you on the path to achieving your goals. #motivation #goals"]

    Strategies to Increase Motivation

Now that you have an understanding of what matters most with regard to what motivates us, it’s time to consider some strategies to increase motivation.

One way to motivate yourself using autonomy is to take ownership of a chore or add some aspect of self-direction to it. When I used to host the Friday Frivolity Link Party, I sometimes struggled to create the posts when our host topic was one that did not appeal to me: hairstyles, lip sync, Donald Duck. UGH! But, when I twisted the theme to make it my own it was so much easier: Crazy Hairstyles the Princess Leia Edition, Lip Sync? Lip Dub? Man I am Old, and Ducks I Like Better than Donald Duck.

To add value to your task, you want to make it meaningful or personal. Find a way to add purpose to that item on your to-do list. This involves changing your perspective or the way you look at that item. Who likes doing dishes or cleaning toilets? anyone? anyone? But the value of a clean kitchen or bathroom is not only about appearance but health as well.

Finally, there’s competence. Feeling mastery over an act requires practice. Try to look at the job at hand as one in which you are working toward an end goal of skillfulness. One area of blogging I feel the most incompetent is photography. I know my photos are lacking, especially the food photos. But, every day I take a photo or two and try to improve. I don't always enjoy trying to get creative taking a photo of my morning coffee every day, but it is good practice for me.

Motivation is not always easy to come by. However, with this knowledge of the science behind it, you can now pursue the steps required to achieve your dreams more effectively. Soon you’ll be mastering your goals, which will fuel your motivation toward future endeavors.

    Put it into Action

Choose one area of your life that you want to improve. Consider how you can use autonomy, value and competence towards making the changes needed. Feel free to share in the comments below so I can cheer you on.

How to Find the Motivation to Get More From Life

How to find the motivation to get more from life

The year is almost half over. So is summer vacation for us. How have you progressed towards your New Year's Resolutions? Are you halfway there? Or have you lost all momentum and now can't find the motivation to get back on track?

Making resolutions is only the first step

I have done great on my nutrition goals, but haven't managed to get consistent about exercise.

On a whim, I started a Project 365 on New Year's Day of posting a photo of my morning coffee every day. The last few weeks it has been a chore. One day I took the photo but never got around to editing and posting it (so two went up the next day). And I haven't updated the monthly round ups here in a few months.

I was determined my son was going to learn to ride a bike and work on typing and cursive writing this summer. The bike is shoved in the back of the garage after his last meltdown and he's currently watching You Tube videos while I type this. Mom of the Year nominee time.

Sometimes letting your goals get hijacked can be a good thing. At the start of the year my goals and focus were on my two blogs. Then something happened and I developed a new revenue stream that is flourishing. But, I need to hone my craft and implement some new strategies to continue to develop that stream into a gently flowing river.

Self improvement requires one thing, that for me is often in short supply: motivation.

Only I can change my life. No One can do it for me. Carol Burnett

You have the desire, but do you have the motivation

I know what I need to do to get physically fit, but putting down the phone and getting off the couch to make the changes is hard. Pushing my son to practice cursive is a bit hypocritical when I can't take the time to work through the hours of classes I have purchased to improve my blog and business.

Does any of this sound familiar? I am guessing it does or you wouldn't have clicked on this post in the first place.  You don't need to wait for the New Year to set a goal, and you can start a diet on a Wednesday (or so I have been told 😉 ).

Awesome Ways to Reuse Plastic Fruit Containers

    Jul 12, 2017 · 4 Comments

collage of plastic fruit containers with text overlay "Creative ways to upcycle plastic clamshell containers"

Summer is the season for wonderful fruit and accumulating plastic fruit containers. Or is it just in my house there is a stack of #1 clam shell containers just waiting to be put to good use?  Sure you could just put them in the recycle bin, but these nifty little containers are actually pretty useful.

collage of plastic fruit containers with text overlay "Creative ways to upcycle plastic clamshell containers"

I am not talking about the green baskets like this one we used for our May Day baskets:

Kids Craft: Strawberry Basket Craft for Mother's Day and May Day. upcycled craft, recycled craft.

And I do not mean the harder #6 plastic containers (usually from the grocery store bakery or take out containers). Those are perfect for making homemade shrinky dinks. The ones that hold berries and cherry tomatoes tend to be #1 plastic which will not work for that.

Better than a paper bag for field trip lunches.

Hey, they are designed to keep delicate fruit from bruising so they are perfect for keeping lunches safe when they are crammed into a box to tote on the field trip.  Brilliant idea from Mommables

    Store "stuff" in them

The chances of me getting my son to organize his gazillion Legos into 5-10 of these like You Modern Dad does, isn't going to happen. But a mom can dream, right? Plus, I would have to cover the bottom so the itty bitty pieces don't slip through the holes.

I love this idea from Sew Many Ways for ribbon or yarn storage (thread the end of the ribbon out the holes at the bottom).

Pretty them up, then store "stuff in them"

Decoupaged Drawer Organizers from Dollar Store Crafts

Kaleidoscope Berry Box from Aunt Peaches

Pretty them up, then give them as gifts

from Secrets of a Super Mommy

    from Notes of Sincerity

    from Tinkered Treasures

I couldn't find a blog to credit this one, but it's a great idea for Back to School, holidays or Teacher Appreciation Week.

    Use them in the garden

Is plastic safe to plant in without leaching harmful chemicals into your healthy food?

This graphic came from Linn Acres Farm and it is something to think about before growing edibles in plastic.

The berry containers are #1, so you can use them to grow seedlings in them like:

    Homesteading.com and

    Momma Owls Lab

Or use them to protect your plants like Root Simple:

I covered my new transplants with them in early spring when the weather here can be windy and break tender seedlings. It also protected them from being dug up by the neighbor's cat that thought my raised beds were a giant litter box.

Let the kid(s) craft with them

Unfortunately this site is no longer up, but you get the idea for making a pretty sun catcher:

Or you could make a treasure chest like The Classroom Creative

The one I am saving them for:

    Halloween

    and/or Christmas

Do you have any other creative ideas to make or do with plastic berry containers? Let me know in the comments below.

Monkey Around with these Cute Monkey Videos on Friday Frivolity

    Jun 15, 2017 · 7 Comments

Monkey Around with these cute monkey videos.

My son started summer vacation this week so I decided to make him help me with the post for this week's "Monkey Around" host theme. We considered Curious George or Dixie and Diddy Kong. But, after some deliberation, we decided on cute monkey videos.

Monkey Around with these cute monkey videos.

I wanted to go with this, but Mr.9 going on 14 gave me the disgusted "No, mom. real monkeys.

When we saw this one he kept shouting, "NO! Give it to him, don't eat it!" (hmm, this monkey follows directions as well as you do.)

"This one is fun". Cute dancing monkeys (and other simians)

Oh my goodness. Zip Van Winkle was surprisingly quiet when he saw this one. Only in my dreams would he fall asleep that quickly.

And to round it out here is cute little Lenny singing.

More importantly, the person that uploaded the Lenny video explains

" UPDATE: He was born at a rescue, I fostered/raised him, and he is now in an awesome home living better than some people!
Do you want a monkey? No. You need permits and owning one is like having a 2 year old (who can jump 10 feet and tear things apart in 3.4 seconds) for 40 years. 10 years if you feed them crap.
Do you still think you want a monkey? Then go volunteer for a year with them. If you can find a place and stick with it, then congrats, you are one of few!
Do I want or own monkeys? NOPE. I loved raising him but would NEVER want the responsibility of caring for an adult monkey!
Should monkeys even be kept as pets? That's neither here nor there - they are, and there are awesome rescues who help repair the mistakes people make when they do get monkeys as pets but don't know any better."

8 Fictional Ducks I Like Better Than Donald #FridayFrivolity

8 Fictional Ducks Better than Donald Duck - fun fictional duck characters

Happy 83rd Birthday Donald Duck! I wish I could say I am a fan, but I'm not. You annoyed me long before people started using you in memes about the POTUS. And now the sight of you gives me the shakes. There are so many awesome duck characters more worthy of esteem than you. So, to put my sarcastic twist on our Friday Frivolity host theme, here are 8 fictional ducks I like better than Donald Duck.8 Fictional Ducks Better than Donald Duck - fun fictional duck characters

Most people, at least where I live, are more familiar with Rick Dees playing music as a radio personality instead of performing. But, way back in 1976 he brought us Disco Duck.

Howard the Duck. 1980's campiness at it's best. Oh Lea, that hair! (I am grateful to have been a teen before social media so there is no evidence I actually owned/used a crimping iron).

The AFLAC duck. So many great commercials to choose from, but this foodie had to go with Guy!

    Yakky Doodle, cuteness overload.

Ming Ming. This is Sewious! And now I am craving celery.

Darkwing Duck (and Gosalyn and Launchpad and Morgana and Bushroot and the entire crew, etc.) Let's Get Dangerous!

Duck Dodgers in the 24th and ½ century! Tom Jones singing the theme song (and lending his voice to one of the funniest episodes) was just enough to nudge out DW for the #2 spot.

And finally the winner of my favorite fictional duck is....

    Rubber Ducky, you're the one!

I had a tough time choosing a feature this week because everyone brought such great stuff to the party last week.

But I finally narrowed it to two, both with a "memorial" theme to it.

Adventures in Weseland - Golden Gate National Cemetery

This post about Golden Gate National Cemetery from Adventures in Weseland was very moving. Maybe it was because I grew up in the Bay Area and know the stories about Port Chicago and the "ten days that shook San Francisco" (nothing to do with earthquakes, btw).

And this post about Mom's Almond Puff Danish from Reviews, Chews and How Tos not only looks delicious, but serves as a reminder to write down the family recipes.

Favorite Wine Quotes from Famous Poets

    May 25, 2017 · 6 Comments

A collection of wine quotes from famous poets: Stevenson, Baudelaire, Cohelo, Yeats, Khayyam, Emerson, Johnson.

It's time for a little wine tasting party with our host theme this week on Friday Frivolity. I could have chosen from the oodles of great wine memes my friend at Draceana Wines posts daily on social media (if you are a wine lover you need to go follow them). But, since Lori and I are both "Poets" thanks to our college mascot, I opted for wine quotes from famous poets.

Real poets, not our fellow Whittier alums 😉

I like the last two best because they are not just referring to wine, but to life.

    I think.

Maybe I need a glass bottle of Cab Franc to figure it out.

3 Tips for Finding Hormone Balance After 40

    May 22, 2017 · 8 Comments

3 Tips for Hormone Balance After 40: a few lifestyle changes can make peri-menopause and menopause a bit easier.

(note: this article contains affiliate links, I may receive a commission for any purchases made through these links at no cost to you. Click here for the full disclosure policy)

Within the year I hope to celebrate both the end of my 40's and the end to peri-menopause. And  I am already planning a celebration for the permanent end to my fertility. I've been ready for awhile.

3 Tips for Hormone Balance After 40: a few lifestyle changes can make peri-menopause and menopause a bit easier. Guest post from Bridgit Danner, LAc, FDNP

I'd like to tell you it has been an easy transition. I have been lucky it hasn't been too bad for me. But sometimes it is brutal. Especially this past year as the symptoms seem to have kicked into high gear. Especially the hot flashes, which are mostly at night and are a contributing factor to my constant exhaustion. Spawning a child on the Autism Spectrum that still doesn't sleep through the night every night could also be a factor.

If you are approaching your 40's or are already there, I have a very informative guest post today from Bridgit Danner, LAc, FDNP, founder of Women's Wellness Collaborative.

    -----

    Balancing Your Hormones After 40

As you approach your 40s, your reproductive years are starting to wind down, and that means changes in your hormones. These changes are inevitable, but the severity of your symptoms depends on your overall health and your knowledge of what is going on in your body and what to do about it.

Let’s review the hormonal changes that occur at peri-menopause and menopause, and then we’ll look at how to optimize your health and avoid weight gain, memory lapses, hot flashes, moodiness and insomnia.

Menopause is when your period stops altogether, and the average age for this is 51. But peri-menopause, a word rarely heard in our culture, is the 5-10 year period of hormonal fluctuation that leads to menopause. It is usually these years that are most challenging.

During peri-menopause, your ovaries are not functioning as well; this is a part of normal aging. But your brain still tries to keep the ovaries working, and some months it’s successful and you ovulate; sometimes it’s not and you don’t. The varying hormone levels that occur in these monthly attempts to keep cycling are what can cause symptoms.

    Tip #1- Avoid Estrogen Dominance

The main hormone imbalance you’ll experience is called estrogen dominance. The amount of estrogen you have is higher relative to progesterone. (Progesterone is only produced in high quantities after a strong ovulation.) Estrogen can be extra dominant when you are are getting xeno-estrogens from things like plastics and fragrances, or if you’re overweight, as fat tissue produces estrogen.

Estrogen dominance can lead to the dreaded heavy periods, frequent periods and mid-cycle spotting of peri-menopause.

You can do many things to reduce estrogen. Here are a few:

    1. Avoid non-organic, processed foods, plastics and artificial fragrances that contain xeno-estrogens.

    2. Eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetable fibers that nourish your good gut bacteria. Your gut helps you clear used estrogens! How many strange vegetables can you buy & try?

    3. Manage your weight. An easy way to slim down is to avoid sugars in coffee drinks, alcoholic drinks and treats. Stick to it for a couple weeks and watch your muffin top melt!

Tip #2- Love On Your Adrenals

As your ovaries slow down and produce less hormone, ideally your adrenal glands will bridge the gap and keep you feeling well. But you’re likely stressed with working, managing a household, and perhaps raising kids or caring for elderly parents. This often means your adrenal glands have been overworked for years as you’ve lived in ‘flight or fight’ mode. So now it’s time to really love up on your adrenals!

    Here’s how:

    1. Get to sleep by 10 PM. There is a deeper level of restoration that happens when you are asleep in the hours before midnight. Try it each night for a week and notice your energy improve!

    2. Get vitamin C. Your adrenal glands use a LOT of vitamin C, especially when you’re stressed or dealing with chronic inflammation, viruses, etc. You can use ½ lemon in water first thing in the morning and again in early afternoon. You can also look for a supplement with vitamin C plus bioflavonoids, and take 1,000 mg /day twice a day, if you doctor approves.

    3. Take rest breaks. Do you want a break? Of course you do! As women, we drive ourselves hard. But you have to take care of you; there is no one else in charge of your care. Try these two tips: After lunch, take a 10 minute lie down. Yes, lie down flat and just rest. If you work outside the home, maybe bring a yoga mat to work and find a quiet place, or go to your car. If it’s nice you can go lie outside. Then as your day closes, but before dinner, take your 10 minute lie down again. You can’t just read this, you really have to do it! You’ll feel the reset when you do take these short breaks.

    Tip #3- Get A Good Night’s Rest

Many women have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, and sleep is super important at this time in life. We produce growth hormone as we sleep, and this growth hormone repairs and rebuilds us; sleep is the fountain of youth! So here are a few ideas if you’re having trouble:

    1. If you are having trouble falling asleep because of a busy mind, take time to wind down at night. Read a book, take a stroll or take a bath. Avoid screens and turn down the lights around the house. If you still need help, try drinking a ½ teaspoon of nutmeg in warm almond milk a bit before bedtime. You’ll be surprised how sleepy it makes you!

    2. For an aromatherapy approach, dab a few drops of pure vetiver and pure lavender oils under your nose and at your temples. Or use a cold mist diffuser to spread this goodness into your bedroom air.

    3. If you wake up during the night, you can still try the above tips, and you may need to look at your blood sugar and liver function. You should be able to burn stored energy as you sleep. If you body can’t do this, your body will spike your energy levels to release blood sugar, and you’ll wake up. Be sure to avoid alcohol, sugar and high carbohydrate foods before bed. Try not to snack between meals and get plenty of healthy fat in your diet from coconut oil, raw nuts, avocados, grass-fed butter or ghee, etc. If you have a great diet, don’t snack, and go to bed early, waking up in the middle of the night may indicate a more complex problem. If your liver is working overtime at night to deal with parasites or other infections, it can’t manage your blood sugar at night as well. This is no diagnosis, just something to consider with your functional health practitioner!

Unique Museums I'd like to visit for International Museum Day (FridayFrivolity)

    May 18, 2017 · 13 Comments

10 Unique Museums from the Ice Age to the Space Age and plenty of fun inbetween.

We are celebrating another fun, albeit obscure, holiday this week on Friday Frivolity: International Museum Day. While I have been to some wonderful fine art and natural history museums, I thought I would offer up some unique museums I think it would be interesting to see.

10 fun and unique museums from the Ice Age to the Space Age with plenty of fun and learning in between.

National Video Game Museum in Frisco, TX. I had this idea 15-20 years ago, but I wanted to put it in Anaheim, Ca. near the House of Mouse. Vintage working game systems covering the history of video games plus a whole lot of STEM education thrown in for fun.

Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, NV. Now if you really want to go old school entertainment, there's the Pinball Hall of Fame. 10,000 square feet of working pinball machines. Just pinball, no prizes, no ticket games, just pure old fashioned pinball. All proceeds from the games are donated to the Salvation Army.

Dr. Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute in Waco, Tx. Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too? Besides housing oodles of Dr. Pepper memorabilia, this museum is also dedicated to "the purpose of educating Texas school children and adults about the economic system that underlies American life". Cool.

Spam Museum in Austin, MN. Yes the canned meat product, not the junk e-mail that was named after it. The museum explains the importance of SPAM to the military, shows vintage ad campaigns and recipes and even includes an ode to the Monty Python skit.

Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, CA. Was Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester Rifle Company fortune crazy for her non stop building in her house or is it really haunted? There's a movie with Helen Mirren coming soon that offers a look inside the house. Or you can go tour the 160 room house for yourself, if you dare.

The Mini Time Machine in Tucson, Az. This museum features a myriad of miniature worlds from different times in history as well as fantasy ones. It features 400 antique and contemporary dollhouses and roomboxes.

Laura Ingalls Wilder House and Museum in Mansfield, Mo. Visit the farm where the Wilders lived. It might not be the Little House in the Big Woods or On the Banks of Plum Creek, but it is where she wrote those beloved stories.

Imiloa in Hilo, HI. The main reason to visit here would be to be in Hawai'i. The vision of the Imiloa "is a place of life‐long learning where the power of Hawai‘i’s cultural traditions, its legacy of exploration, and the wonders of astronomy come together to provide inspiration and hope for generations". With a Planetarium and Native Garden as well as cultural exhibits, I could see myself spending a lot of time there.

In case you want some Natural History and Fine Art, here are two I have been to and would love to go back.

La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, CA. Learn about the Ice Age by checking out the fossils found stuck in the natural asphaltic pits in the middle of metropolitan Los Angeles. But the coolest part is this is still an active dig site. You can watch as they excavate fossils of a Columbian mammoth found when they built a parking garage for the museum. Most places keep this kind of work behind closed doors and only display the results, which I think is a shame.

Queen Califa's Magical Circle in Escondido, CA. This unique sculpture garden is in the middle of a suburban park. We stopped by on our way home from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly known as the Wild Animal Park) 6-7 years ago.  The kids had a blast running around the mosaic sculptures while the Moms got to appreciate a little art. We tried to go back a few years ago when it was closed for repairs :(.

15 Easy (and Frugal) Ways to Spoil Mom on Mother's Day

    May 3, 2017 · 4 Comments

15 Easy and Frugal ways to spoil Mom on Mother's Day. You don't need to buy Mom an expensive gift to let her know how much you appreciate her.

Moms do so much for the rest of the family throughout the year. It’s nice to make her feel special at least once a year. Speaking as a Mom, most of us don't want expensive flowers, meals or presents. What means the most are the "gifts" that show you really appreciate us and all of our hard work. Listed below are some easy and frugal ways to spoil your mom this Mother's Day or any day.

15 Easy and Frugal ways to spoil Mom on Mother's Day. You don't need to buy Mom an expensive gift to let her know how much you appreciate her.

    Special times

Rather than taking Mom out for lunch to a crowded restaurant on Mother’s Day, why not plan a fun picnic. You can either have it at a local park, the back yard, or even indoors if the weather isn’t co-operating. Spread the blanket out on the living room floor and you won’t even have to contend with ants!

Springtime is a great time to fly a kite because it is often windy and warm. It probably won’t matter what type of kite you fly as long as you have fun doing it. Make your own kite or pick one up at a discount or dollar store. Then go fly a kite together as a family.

Create a day spa in the privacy of your own home. Set up candles around the bathtub, find some nice bubble bath, play soothing music and then get the kids out of the house to let Mom have time to enjoy the peace and quiet.  She’ll definitely feel spoiled and pampered.  Here's an easy Milk Bath in Jar recipe you can make for her.

Gifts in a Jar - Relaxing Herbal Milk Bath Mix. Powdered milk and Epsom salts combined with herbs or even dried herbal tea make a soothing bath mix.

Feeling up for making a Mother's Day Brunch? Here are some simple recipes for a simple healthy meal.

    SImple and Healthy Spring Brunch

    Books and writing

Find a favorite book shared by Mom and the children. If the children can read, have them record themselves reading the book. This idea can also be used with children who are small; instead of having them read, give them specific words they can say while you read the book. Mom will love having this memento of her children’s voices, especially when they get older.

Print one of our Mother's Day cards or have the kids make this Big Hug card and have the children write a short paragraph explaining how special she is. If they can’t write, have them dictate what they want to say. Be sure to write it down verbatim so Mom knows exactly how they feel – even if what they say is funny.

Printable Mother's Day Cards: free floral Mother's Day cards that can be printed at home.

Make a coupon book she can use at a future date. One hour of time alone is a good coupon, and vacuuming or ironing could also be offered. Teens could include coupons for taking younger siblings to play dates or practices; they could also provide babysitting services so Mom and Dad can go out. Younger children can include coupons for doing dishes, cleaning up their room or taking out the garbage. A back or foot massage is always appreciated, but she may enjoy the coupon for a breakfast in bed most of all. Use your imagination. Think of things the children could give her and then a few from you.

    Fun with Photos

There aren’t many Moms who don’t enjoy pictures of their children. Why not find a clear box and put photos inside to make a photo cube? Mom will love the pictures and having them inside a clear box will protect them. When she wants a different picture, she can flip the cube to see a different smiling face.

Or take some photographs of the children during various times of the day and night. Then create a collage with the photos. Be sure to write down the children’s ages and the date it’s to be given so Mom will be able to think back to how the children were when they were younger. If you can get it laminated at an office supply store or printer, this will protect the photos for years to come.

If you want to get really crafty, you can make some easy flowers with construction paper and chenille stems with the children's photos on them. Full instructions here if you need them.

Kids Craft: Strawberry Basket Craft for Mother's Day and May Day. upcycled craft, recycled craft.

Get Mom in the picture! Moms are usually the family photographers. Even if it is only on Mother's Day, make it a point to take pictures of Mom with the kids. Some can be posed, but candid shots are great. Make a photo album or collage and give it to her after Mother's Day. GASP! Yes, gave her a second gift after the day.

[Tweet "Spoil Mom on Mother's Day without breaking the bank. #mothersdayideas #frugalgifts"]

    Get Crafty

Find a plain t-shirt in Mom’s favorite color and washable fabric paints. The children can place their hands or feet in the paint and then onto the shirt. Write “My mom is covered in hands of love” or “My children walk all over me” with the names, ages, and date the shirts were made. Be sure to follow the directions to make the paint permanent.

Have the children pick out some pretty beads from the craft department or a craft store. Get the string and clasps while you’re there. Then let the children make Mom a one-of-a-kind bead necklace.

If she loves plants or flowers, buy a terracotta pot and paint it. You can place a plant in the pot or use it as a container for candy which has been wrapped in color cellophane and green chenille stems.

Using craft sticks or twigs from your yard, you can make a vase, pencil holder or candle holder for her desk. Start out with a clean, empty can and glue the craft sticks or twigs onto it, or clip the clothes pins on a short can (full directions here). Tie a raffia or fabric ribbon on the can to both keep the sticks on the can and add a decorative touch. If making a vase, fill it with the photo flowers mentioned above.

Easy Craft: Candle Holder for All Seasons: candle holder made with clothes pins that can be redecorated every season. kids craft

Create a homemade message board. Find an old picture with a frame. Take the picture out, cover it with fabric and stretch ribbon from one side to the other to create diamonds. Staple the ribbon around the edges and place it back into the frame. When it is hung up, Mom can place notes or pictures on it so she can keep track of things that are important.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make Mom feel valued. In fact, any of these ways to spoil mothers on their special day will probably do just fine. Of course, anything you give that comes from the heart will be treasured because she knows it came with love.

To the moms out there: feel free to share this post with your family. It is probably the only way my guys would remember. 😉

Printable Mother's Day Cards: free floral Mother's Day cards that can be printed at home.

All have ½ inch margins and should print on standard 8 ½ by 11 paper. The quarter fold are probably best on bright white heavy duty paper since the need to be folded in half and half again. The double sided can go on card stock since they only need to be folded in the middle. Set your printer to flip along the long side (or manually flip it) so the sentiment ends up on the correct side.

If you click on the links below the photos you can probably figure it out yourself.

Broadway Cats Memes - a collection of broadway memes with cats.

As soon as I saw the Friday Frivolity hosts theme was Cats this week my brain started singing

The Rum Tum Tugger is a curious cat
And there isn't any call for me to shout it
For he will do as he did, do
And there's no doing anything abou-ou-ou-ou- about it

So, I just decided to run with Broadway Musical cat memes.

Broadway Cats Memes - a collection of broadway memes with cats.

Cats was the first stage production I saw. It was nice living in the Bay Area and having San Francisco and Berkeley just a train ride away for a legitimate theater experience.

And for those of you that are fans of the Jellicle Cats, you can find out which Cat you were meant to be with a few fun Cats Quizzes.

I got Jenny Anydots with this one from Cats the Musical.  Then I got Old Deuteronomy on this one from Buzzfeed.

    I'll just be happy I wasn't Grizabella.

How to Get the Most from Co-Hosting a Giveaway

    Apr 24, 2017 · 2 Comments

How to get the most from co-hosting a giveaway: strategies for before, during and after an online giveaway to attract and keep new followers.

Hosting giveaways on your blog can help you gain followers both on your blog and social media, but if you want to keep those followers you need to do a few things before, during and after the giveaway. This post isn't about how to organize a giveaway. Today I am focusing on how to get the most out of a group giveaway as one of the co-hosts.

How to get the most from co-hosting a giveaway: strategies for before, during and after an online giveaway to attract and keep new followers.

I only participate in a few giveaways every year, where as some people host them regularly. I have organized one myself, and I recommend participating in a few group giveaways before hosting your own so you know what is involved behind the scenes.

This week, I will be participating in two giveaways on my blogs. In the first, I joined with 40+ other bloggers for a $200 prize package to help people make healthier meals over on That Recipe for #RecipeMakeover. On Friday I will join with about 2 dozen bloggers for a $250 Mother's Day Giveaway both here and on That Recipe.

    Before the Giveaway Begins

Make sure the host has all of your information, money, photos, etc. before the deadline. Share the opportunity with your fellow bloggers. Many prizes are determined by the number of participants. A $250 giveaway attracts more people than a $50 one.

Prepare your post: for some giveaways you will just cut and paste the code into a post and you are done. For some you will create a post and add the giveaway code. For example, for the #RecipeMakeover I made one post just about the giveaway and two other posts with recipes referencing back to the giveaway.

[Tweet "Prepare your blog and social media accounts before hosting a giveaway #bloggingtips #blogging"]

    Prepare your blog:

You have less than 5 seconds to grab the attention of people entering a giveaway before they click to the next way to enter. How would they view your blog and social media accounts?

    • Get rid of clutter in the sidebar.
    • Make sure your social media follow buttons are easy to find and are correct.
    • Put your best content front and center. Use sticky posts, content sliders, etc. to show your best posts instead of just your most recent.
    • If you are trying to grow your e-mail list get your opt-ins ready
    • Make sure your sign up forms are easy to find and work!
    • Consider a special opt-in for the duration of the giveaway. ("Choosing Healthy Fats" will be mine for the Recipe Makeover but I may change it for "Mother's Day")

    Prepare your social media:

    • Pin your best post to the page for Facebook and Twitter
    • Edit your "showcase" on Pinterest (the slider at the top of your boards) to show your best boards
    • Post relevant posts to your niche for at least a few weeks before the giveaway. If you are a food blogger do I see food related posts or you voicing your political opinion or ranting about what so and so wore to the Oscars. Your blog, your choice, but could one random rant post put off new followers? Do you care? If so fix it, if not, move on.
    • Plan social media shares for the duration of the giveaway. Be prepared to share about the giveaway as well as giving new followers a taste of what they can expect on your blog and social media feed.

    During the Giveaway:

Share share share! Be prepared to post several times a day on social media throughout the giveaway.

No, I don't mean get on Facebook 3 times a day for 2 weeks and post "I have a giveaway here!" Don't just promote your post and the giveaway, but also promote the other bloggers and share more of what you normally share on your social media accounts.

Personally, I use Co-Schedule and Tailwind to help me schedule. Both are affiliate links, I receive a commission, at no cost to you, if you decide to check them out - for free by the way - then subscribe.

They both help me with the sharing throughout the year, but especially with giveaways. I can sit down with both and schedule out sharing the giveaway on all of my major social media networks as well as other posts to capture the interest of anyone entering the giveaway throughout the time period. It only takes about 30 minutes for me to plan out several weeks of sharing and it looks to some people (my mother) that I am always online.

Scheduling is great, but make sure to check in to your social media accounts every day or so to interact with people, especially the new ones.

[Tweet "When hosting a giveaway schedule social media posts throughout the giveaway period. #blogging #bloggingtips"]

    After the Giveaway Ends:

Decide if it was worth it. If you spent $10 to gain 10 new followers on Facebook that's $1 a follow. You might not want to participate again if that were the case. On the other hand if you gain a large following then you probably want to try to work with that group again. The two I am working with this week I have worked with before and had excellent results so I always try to join in when they offer.

Continue cultivating those new followers to turn them into "customers" or at least repeat visitors.

Have you participated in giveaways before? Are they good for your blog or not worth the effort? Did I miss any tips you would add? I'd love for you to let me know in the comments below.

How to Organize a Community Clean Up (Friday Frivolity)

    Apr 20, 2017 · 2 Comments

How to Organize a Community Clean Up: Some people complain about the trash in their neighborhood, others get the neighbors together to clean it up.

Last Saturday my son and I participated in a Community Clean Up of one of the main streets leading in to our neighborhood. Since the Friday Frivolity hosts have a rain / Earth Day theme this week I thought I would give you some easy ideas to help you organize a community clean up in your own neighborhood.

How to Organize a Community Clean Up: Some people complain about the trash in their neighborhood, others get the neighbors together to clean it up.

One of my neighbors did something that is almost unthinkable in today's society. She noticed there was a lot of trash on the main street in our neighborhood and she took to social media. Big deal, doesn't everyone do that when  something bothers them there days? But, she didn't complain. She didn't turn it into a political tirade. She didn't break into a modern rendition of "What's the matter with these kids today". She didn't say someone should do something.

She asked if people wanted to get together and help clean it up. And people were thrilled to help. She picked a day and a time, set up a Facebook event, and told people to show up with a trash bag and gloves. About 30 of us came and in less than an hour we had tidied up the 1.5 mile stretch of road. We got to meet some neighbors we had only seen around school or the grocery store and our neighborhood looks so much better.

There were a lot of young people, some of which were doing it as an activity with Boy Scouts or for service hours at school. And a certain 8 year old who desperately needs to learn there are other human beings on this planet and he needs to start helping them or he may not live to see his 9th birthday. But, I am not going to name any names.

How to Organize a Community Clean Up: Some people complain about the trash in their neighborhood, others get the neighbors together to clean it up.
This is from about 3/10 of a mile on both sides of the street. No, I am not throwing away the 8 year old... yet.

Everyone that participated agreed it was actually fun and we are planning to do the cross street soon.

How to Organize a Community Clean Up: Some people complain about the trash in their neighborhood, others get the neighbors together to clean it up.
The first piece of the day, a poop bag. Put it in a bag then drop it on the sidewalk. SMH!

How to Organize a Community Clean Up: Some people complain about the trash in their neighborhood, others get the neighbors together to clean it up.
His photo of me. ha ha! I bet you can still tell what I was holding.

There was lots of trash from the local coffee place and fast food restaurants and plenty of water bottles. Also, there were some rather nasty things you wouldn't want to touch with bare hands. The one item I didn't see was single use plastic bags. Yes, I live in California where they are now illegal.

If you are feeling inspired to organize a community clean up of your own here's all you need to do:

    • pick an area that needs to be cleaned (park, street, etc.)
    • pick a day and time to meet
    • recruit people to help (social media and word of mouth are better than paper flyers or posters)
    • have people bring their own trash bags and gloves
    • arrange for the trash to be disposed of properly
    • thank people for coming, especially the kids

Depending on the time of year, you might also recommend people bring their own hats, sunscreen and water. And seriously, don't forget the gloves 😉

So you want to know what it's like parenting a child with Autism

    Apr 18, 2017 · Leave a Comment

So you want to know what it's like parenting a child with Autism - humorous autism parenting memes.

I don't write a great deal about parenting a child on the Autism Spectrum. Some days it is just parenting. Others days it is a monumental suckfest. If you have a friend or family member that is parenting a child on the spectrum, you might want to understand what it is like. Speaking on behalf of other parents of children on the spectrum: we love you, but you will never understand. Unless you live with it 24/7 you can never truly understand. But, here is a small glimpse into my life as an Autism mom.

So you want to know what it's like parenting a child with Autism - humorous autism parenting memes.

Please do not tell me we are blessed or special or God has chosen us.

I know you mean well, but it is annoying and not the least bit comforting.

Before you ask "Have you tried.." or "Can't you just..."  or " I read an article..." or "I have a friend..."

Some days it is like this...

And some days it is like this. Especially with our Triennial IEP coming up next month.

I'd love to sit and chat with you, but...

disaster can be just a blink away.

Don't get me started on the subject of food.

Please do not tell me I am "catering to my child".

"Give me some choices." and he doesn't like any of them. Or says yes then refuses to eat it.

turnips in the mashed potatoes? beets in the chocolate cake? whatever do you mean?

Try as you might, only Autism parents truly understand...

    It's the stuff of nightmares.

Everyone: "How was Spring Break?" Me, "Loud".

We love you, you will always be our family or friend. But sometimes we need the solidarity that only comes from someone else in the trenches.

I do not presume to speak for every Autism parent because:

Personally, I don't want your sympathy or praise. It might make you feel better, but it annoys me no end.

There are some things you will not understand if you haven't experienced it. There are plenty of things I can't understand because I have never experienced them.

If you want to understand anything, understand if I am in the midst of the lowest of the lows I am probably going to ignore you. I probably won't want to talk about. It has nothing to do with you. There are times when my child needs 200% of my attention and energy and I have nothing left to give anyone.

I'd love to make plans and keep them. I'd like to be able to go to an event and be able to enjoy it and stay for the whole thing. But it doesn't always work out that way. It isn't you. It isn't me. It isn't him. It is just our reality.

But, most importantly, I want you all to understand.

5 Reasons Public School Is the Best for Our Son

    Apr 12, 2017 · 7 Comments

Public school might not be the best option for every student in the United States, but it is the right one for our son. Parenting and education.

My husband and I believe that our local public school is the best place to educate our son for a variety of reasons.

If you are expecting me to deride homeschooling, charter schools or private schools you are going to be disappointed. I have several family members and friends that were homeschooled and are successful adults. Ditto for charter schools. My husband attended a private school for 12 years and I taught in one.

They all provide excellent learning opportunities. I have nothing against them. I am 100% for them, for the right students. They are not the best fit for my son at this time.

Public school might not be the best option for every student in the United States, but it is the right one for our son. Parenting and education.

    Education and the Mommitment

Recently, I have come across a few blog posts and many social media posts from homeschooling parents that are highly critical of public education in the United States for any student. Some express the belief that it should be abolished and women should stay home and educate their children. The message from these individuals is that I do not love my child enough to homeschool him. That I put no thought in to how he is educated and am too lazy and selfish to explore other options.

I believe in the Mommittment: the idea that every parent is making decisions in the best interest of their child and family and should not be judged for choosing something different than I chose. Compassion and support instead of judgement and shame.

[Tweet "The #Mommitment should encompass educational choice. No more #momshaming"]

We considered and researched various options for our son's education. There were many reasons we opted for the public school. Here are a few.

Reason #1: Our local elementary school is awesome

As educators my husband and I both believe the administration sets the tone for a school. Our principal knows all 1200 students by name, and most of the parents too. His commitment to education and character development is clearly evident in the staff and students. Every member of the staff is caring and dedicated to the development of every child. The school does very well in standardized testing and any deficiencies are viewed as opportunities for growth to better serve the needs of the students.

Are all public schools this way? No. But ours is, so why shouldn't I take advantage of that.

Reason #2: My son's "team" is awesome

J is on the Autism spectrum. With the help of the district's special education department, he has gone from special needs pre-school to fully integrated in a mainstream classroom with an aide available to assist if needed. We are all working towards him being fully independent. And we all agree on what areas he needs to work on to get there. At our last IEP meeting, without prior consultation, three of the four of us had discovered one glaring area of development he needs to work on that could effect his future academic success. It was easy to make goals when we all agreed on where we want him to be and what he needs to get there.

Are all school districts this way? No. Not all students in our own district have the same experience with their teams.

Reason #3: He needs the daily socialization

J is on the Autism spectrum. He needs to learn to interact in mainstream society. He needs to learn it isn't always what he wants, there are other people in the world. He needs to learn to deal with people with different ideals. He needs to learn to deal with people that are not nice and tell him that red rain boots are for girls (or homeschooling is the only education option).

He is very fortunate to have great peer support. In Kindergarten he was lucky enough to be placed with a group of students that "get him". Truthfully they often get him better than I do. They get more upset when people make fun of him than he does.

I could bubble wrap my son so nothing upsets him. But that won't prepare him for the "real world." I could tell him these things until I am blue in the face, but experience is the best teacher for him. He needs the practical daily interaction with people who might be supportive and understanding of him as well as those that are not.

[Tweet "I could bubble wrap my son so nothing upsets him. But that won't prepare him for the "real world." #parenting #education"]

Reason #4: We want him exposed to different ideas, experiences and people

In reason #1 I said our school was awesome. It is becoming more awesome by becoming an International Baccalaureate school. The IB Primary Years Programme

"prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child."

Our society is becoming more and more global every day. We are being exposed to ideas and philosophies from cultures that might be vastly different than our own. But there is also a great deal of commonality. I want my son to see the similarities in human cultures and to respect the differences.

GASP! But what if someone tells him something that goes against your moral beliefs? We tell him what we believe and why. We explain not everyone views the world the same way; that you can allow other people to believe what they want and still hold true to your convictions AND you should still be respectful when you disagree.

Reason #5: We can teach him things not covered in school

Cursive writing is covered for one semester in our district. I know J needs more than that so I supplement at home. We are educating him in our faith. I teach him to apply the mathematics and reading comprehension skills to cooking. We go to museums, go on nature walks, do science experiments, learn about music and the arts on our own.

Just because we have chosen to educate our son in the public education system does not mean we have abdicated our role as primary educators. If we see a need or he has an interest in a particular area we are still allowed to pursue that even though he attends public school.

[Tweet "Five reasons public school is the best option for my son. #parenting #education"]

Do what is best for your child

I will repeat what I said earlier. I am a firm believer in the Mommitment. Compassion and support instead of judgement and shame.

Is public school the best option for every child? No.

Is public school the best option for your child? I don't know. That's for you to decide.

Is public school the best option for my child? For now, yes.

Maybe down the road it won't be and we will have to look at other options. But, for now, he is right where he needs to be to become a productive and happy member of society. And, I assume every other parent is making the best decision for their child.

Funny Animals More Afraid of Spiders than You Are

Funny Animals More Afraid of Spiders than You Are (funny spider memes)

The first week of April is "Be Kind to Spiders Week" so one of the Friday Frivolity crew thought it would be a fun idea to have a spider theme. We could do spider crafts, spider books, or share information about how spiders are really helpful creatures to our world.

Funny Animals More Afraid of Spiders than You Are (funny spider memes)

    I was not that host...

I jest. I actually don't have a problem with spiders for the most part, as long as they stay outside and eat the plant destroying ants we can happily co-exist.

My friend, Mary, is another story. Read her hysterical encounter with a spider that inspired the creation of what may very well be the ugliest cake in the history of ugly cakes (made by yours truly). It may look scary, but it more than made up for it in taste. Get the recipe here, but you can just make a regular looking cake if you want. ;).

U-G-L-Y I ain't got no alibi! But I am delicious!

My Favorite Coffees and Project365 Coffee Photos for March

    Apr 5, 2017 · Leave a Comment

My favorite coffees plus a month of coffee photos

Just a quick post today to share with you my two favorite coffees and the March Photos for my Project 365: Coffee Photos.

My favorite coffees plus a month of coffee photos

Since starting this journey of photographing my morning cup of coffee every day for the entire year, it is challenging me in different ways than I expected.

I figured I would have a hard time remembering the number of the day I was on, but my son is now helping me with that.

I also figured that I would run out of creative photo ideas. Looking back I see I have at least one photo of pancakes every month and quite a few green smoothies, including today's with just the ingredients.

One thing I was not expecting was to become a coffee snob. But I have. I made some flavored coffee from a well known chain and threw out the entire pot after a few sips. Now it could have just been that it was flavored, but it was so bitter after having a week of amazingly smooth coffee that I couldn't finish it.

Before I tell you my two current favorites I'd better disclose a few things to make the FTC happy. These are not affiliate links. I don't make a dime if you buy from these links. But I did a sponsored post for one last year, and I do work with a company that sells the other.

Both companies are small batch roasters and source their coffee beans from sustainable eco-friendly and Fair Trade sources, so not only does the coffee tastes great, I get to feel good about drinking it.

    Caveman Coffee: Sabertooth Roast.

I got this as part of Choctoberfest and made some Mocha Cupcakes. The cupcakes were delicious and the coffee was even better. But at $22 a pop for 12 ounces it is a bit pricey. Still cheaper than going to a certain nameless coffee shop and having their brew, but...

    Cafe Virtuoso

I can get this in my weekly harvest along with my fresh locally grown organic produce from Harvest 2 U, the local CSA I am partnering with to create awesome nutrient dense recipes for their site. This is the coffee that ruined cheaper coffee for me. It is $14 for 12 ounces. A bit more expensive than my usual brand but worth it. Since most of you don't live in Harvest 2U's delivery area (yet 😉 ) you can buy directly from their site if you are so inclined.

Why Clean House When You Can Read Funny House Cleaning Memes?

    Mar 30, 2017 · 10 Comments

Why Clean House When You Can Read Funny House Cleaning Memes: I hate house cleaning memes.

Our two week Spring Break spent entirely at home is sloooowly coming to a close. FEMA would take one look at my downstairs and write me a big fat disaster relief check on the spot. There is one skinny little path to get from doorway to doorway in the midst of the chaos. And my mother is stopping in for a visit. I should be cleaning. Instead I am looking up funny house cleaning memes.

But it was only because of our Friday Frivolity host theme. 😉

Why Clean House When You Can Read Funny House Cleaning Memes: I hate house cleaning memes.

Yes, I will do this before she gets here.

I need to learn how to do this! Teach me oh Photoshop experts!

Never while he is cleaning.Though I may grumble a little as I try to find the dishes he put in the wrong places.

My husband has been known to ask this or "who came over".

This is a cleaning routine I think I can handle.

By Sunday night, it may actually come to this.

Where can I lodge a formal complaint?

My piles of junk are only shin high...

My dust bunnies like to steal elastic hair bands.

Fun with Filters: 12 Free Spring Nature Photos

    Mar 27, 2017 · 15 Comments

Do you need some spring photos for your blog, ads, quotes, presentations, etc.? Well, look no further. Here are 12 free to use any way you want spring nature photos. With modification, without modification, commercial or non-commercial.

Free Spring Nature Photos. No attribution needed stock images: flower photos. bee photos, butterfly photos, grape leaf photo. Movavi Photo Editor Review

As Spring officially arrived last week, my backyard beckoned "Come photograph me". At least I think that's what it said. It could have been "WEED me".

Since, it has been way too long since I photographed anything other than food or my morning coffee, I obliged.

    Photo Software: Movavi Photo Editor

The photos were edited using Movavi Photo Editor

I tried the trial version of another of their products and loved it so much I bought it and added in the Photo Editor at checkout. Once I tried the Photo Editor, I liked it so much, I had to research how to become an affiliate. If you end up purchasing any product using the links on this page I will receive a commission at no cost to you (more information here).

Movavi Photo Editor has all of the basic tools you'd expect (brightness, contrast, temperature, sharpness) plus a bunch of other great features. I really loved their filters like: Acid, Mixed Berry Smoothie, and Fever plus all of the ones based off of artists color pallets.

Here's a sample of what I did with the software:

Why I love Movavi Photo Editor. Inexpensive and easy to use photo editing software.

Obviously, I cropped it to focus on the butterfly. Then, I straightened it to the fence board in the background. I still had some blossoms from other stalks in the photo that I thought were distracting, so I removed them. Then I brightened and saturated, etc.

    A few cons:

    • I wish they had a more subtle vignette feature. Sometimes I want just a subtle focus on the center.
    • Object removal and background removal are sloooooow. They work well, you just have to be patient.

Movavi offers all types of video, audio and photo software for Mac and Windows users. They have a Spring sale for 30% of any of its products using this coupon code: NSL17SPR30OFF. Be sure to enter that at checkout to save!

    The Photos

Enough of the sales pitch! On to the pictures. To save the photos just right click on it and chose save photo.

Yellow Swallowtail on a Sage blossom. If you plant native flowers they will come...

Thompson Seedless Grapes. I'm hoping for a bumper crop this year with all of the rain.

    Ceanothus, aka California lilac.

Bee on a California lilac. I repeat, if you plant native flowers they will come.

Pretty pink flowers on a tree at the park. Sorry, I don't know the name. If you do, let me know in the comments.

If you use any of the photos, I'd love to know what you did with them. Either comment below or, if you use it for something on social media, just tag me.

Holding Back the Years: an 80s Music Tribute (Friday Frivolity)

    Mar 23, 2017 · 15 Comments

Holding Back the Years: an 80s Music tribute. What happens when Sara, Amanda, Billie Jean, Mickey, Jack and Dianne go dancing in Funkytown?

One of our favorite shows used to be "Whose Line is It Anyway?" and I loved when they would improvise a scene using song titles. So for our Friday Frivolity host theme of 80s music I wrote the following scene a la Whose Line.

Setting: a group of friends at a night club in Funkytown.

    Cast:

    • Jack & Diane, two American kids growing up in the heartland
    • Mickey, he's so fine I lost my mind
    • Sara, storms are brewin' in her eyes
    • Amanda, gonna take you by surprise
    • Billie Jean, more like a beauty queen from a movie scene

Sara: I Love Rock n’ Roll.

Mickey: It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me

    Amanda: Shout! Karma Chameleon!

Jack and Dianne: Two Hearts. Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Glory of Love.  Together Forever.

Billy Jean: I Want to Know What Love Is

Mickey: Who’s That Girl.  She Drives Me Crazy

Amanda: Who Can It Be Now?

    Sara: Jessie’s Girl

Mickey: Oh Sheila! Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car!  Need You Tonight

[Mickey chases after woman in the crowd]

Billie Jean: Every Rose Has Its Thorn

Jack:  Baby, Come To Me. I Just Can’t Stop Loving You

Dianne:  Anything For You. Every Breath You Take

    [Mickey returns]

Mickey: Maneater! Where Do Broken Hearts Go?

Billy Jean: Owner of a Lonely Heart

Sara:  Another One Bites the Dust

    Amanda: Don’t Worry Be Happy

    Sara: Let’s Dance!  Let’s Go Crazy! Flashdance . . . What A Feeling

    Amanda: Rock me Amadeus!

Mickey:  Venus! Here I Go Again. Come On Eileen.  Don’t You Want Me?

    [Mickey chases after another woman]

    Sara: Time After Time

Amanda:  Let’s Hear It For the Boy

    Sara: With or Without You?

Billie Jean: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

[Sara and Amanda go out on the dance floor]

    Jack: Endless Love

Dianne: Saving All My Love For You

    Jack:  Greatest Love of All

Dianne: Heaven Is a Place On Earth

Jack: The Way You Make Me Fee.

    Dianne: Forever Your Girl. Kiss

Billy Jean:  You Give Love a Bad Name.

    Jack: Beat It

Billie Jean: On My Own. Red Red Wine.

[Billie Jean heads to the bar]

Jack: Careless Whisper. I Think We’re Alone Now

Dianne: Baby, I Love Your Way

    Jack:  Invisible Touch

    Dianne: Take My Breath Away

    Jack: Can’t Fight This Feeling

Dianne: Do That To Me One More Time

Jack: Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now

    Dianne: Satisfied

    Mickey: The Flame!

    Sara: St.Elmo's Fire!

    Amanda: Chariots of Fire!

    Billie Jean: Eternal Flame!

Jack and Dianne: We Didn’t Start The Fire

    Billie Jean: Could’ve Been

Sara: Blame It On the Rain

Amanda: I Love A Rainy Night

Jack and Dianne: Hard to Say I’m Sorry

Billie Jean: Escape (The Pina Colada Song)!

Mickey:  One More Try. Hello! Got My Mind Set on You. Baby Don’t Forget My Number. Call Me.  [chases after a female firefighter]

    Sara: Addicted to Love

    Billie Jean: Out of Touch

    Amanda: Sussudio

[This is a work of fiction. Any similarities to real people and events is purely coincidental. 😉 ]

We are going Irish again with our Friday Frivolity Host theme. Last year I shared some fun Irish Girl memes, this year I'm having a SciFi St. Patrick's Day.

I have always disliked the pinching part of St. Patrick's Day.

Admit it you read it in your head as Leprekhaaaaann.

Since St. Patrick's Day is on a Friday this year we enjoyed our corned beef last Sunday and will be enjoying a meatless meal on the 17th.

Over on That Recipe we have recipes for Baked Corned Beef and Colcannon as well as Beef Stew with Guinness and a host of other Irish recipes.
